Welcome to Peter Cheung's YunGang Grottos Web site for one of my favorite site in China. This is the first dedicated site about the YunGang Grottoes in the web. This web site presents in detail what is in YunGang Grottoes from a tourist point of view. I have purchased many books and VCD (all in Chinese) and have spent weeks studying the YunGang Grottoes. Since I only have some basic knowledge of general Chinese history, and not much expertise in arts and religion history, this web site is definitely written from a tourist point of view. Another difficulty is in translating the Chinese terms into English. Also information on YunGang Grottoes are not unified and there are many different points of views. I do believe a picture is better then hundreds of words especially for the tourist. This web site definitely provided you with more pictures then any other sources you can find in English. This web site is to promote YunGang Grottos as a tourist site for foreign travelers who is interested in Art and History. I have found very few information about historic, art and cultural sites of China in English. There are very few books or VCD about YunGang Grottos in English. I hope this web site will give those who are interested in YunGang Grottoes enough information and pictures to satisfy your curiosity. This web site is organized by grottoes numbers from 1 to 53 in three sections. From a history point of view there are 3 major time periods of the carvings. But for a tourist I feel that it is easier to understand the site by the order of the geographic of the Grottoes. There are about 300 pictures in this web site. Since you are not allowed to take pictures inside most of the grottoes pictures are taken from VCD and books. You can go to my 9 day middle China tour to get some photos I took myself in YunGang Grottoes.
